Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), narratore dalla prosa potente, osservatore lucido e acuto della commedia umana del suo tempo, realizza in questo racconto una narrazione ad incastri in cui il protagonista, il viveur Joseph de Bardon, al fine di intrattenere gli amici, diventerà, ad un tempo, narratore e personaggio della storia. La girandola di emozioni del protagonista durante la galante avventura al cimitero di Montmartre suscita curiosità e sorpresa, tenerezza ed ilarità.
