U.S. and Russian officials are reportedly floating a proposal to end the Ukraine war by modeling it after Israel’s decades-long control of the West Bank—keeping Ukraine’s borders intact on paper while giving Russia de facto control over occupied territories. Supporters call it a loophole; critics warn it’s a recipe for endless conflict and division. Here’s why copying one of the world’s most intractable disputes could be a dangerous blueprint for Europe.

discussing Israel's occupation of the West Bank and want to
use that as a model for ending the war in Ukraine.
Under this scenario, Russia would have military and economic control

of occupied Ukraine under its own governing body, imitating Israel's
de facto rule of Palestinian territory that was seized from
Jordan nineteen sixty seven. Again, I guess this is a loophole,
a loophole that would circumvent barrier where the Ukrainian constitution

is not allowed to see territory without holding in all
Ukraine referendum. Again, Zelenski is saying, I'm not doing this,
I'm not handing territory over. Under this model, Ukraine's borders
would not change, just as the borders of the West
Bank have gone unchanged for fifty eight years. But it's

just under Israel's control. I don't know it could be
me calling me crazy, But this whole West Bank thing
in Israel.

possibility of continued violence in that area. Again, I'm going
