Read MoreOn the swaggering "Let Me
Reintroduce Myself," Gwen Stefani makes her stance clear: "I'm still the original, original me."
The line doesn't just feed into the single’s celebratory vibe—it's a perfect affirmation of the
California native's boundary-crushing life and career. There's no one quite like her. Throughout
it all, Stefani has remained original, a trendsetting music and fashion icon with an impressive
array of honors—three GRAMMY® Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, two Billboard Awards, an
American Music Award, a Brit Award—not to mention a rainbow-hued body of work that exudes
optimism, openness, and empowerment.
Stefani has continued to challenge herself creatively. As the charismatic frontwoman of ska-punk
heroes No Doubt, Stefani encouraged generations to demolish gender stereotypes via
relevant-as-ever anthems like "Just a Girl." which rails against the unfair expectations the
world puts on women. With the four-times platinum Love. Angel. Music. Baby., she reinvented
herself as a vivacious solo superstar—taking musical influence from hip-hop and '80s electro—and
cemented her larger-than-life status with her equally chic and diverse clothing line, L.A.M.B.
Her 2015 solo album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200
thanks to its sophisticated, retro-inspired pop soundscapes. And in recent years, Stefani has,
of course, branched out even further, recording multiple chart-busting country singles with
country superstar Blake Shelton and mentoring future trailblazers as a coach on NBC’s The Voice.
Even as "Let Me Reintroduce Myself" kicks off the next chapter in Stefani’s musical journey, the
2020 single finds her reminding fans of what she does best: create vibrant, uplifting music that
couldn’t be dreamed up by anyone else. “I wanted to make a record that is just very honest and
real to who I am, but that other people can escape into,” says Stefani. Recorded in quarantine
and co-written with Ross Golan and Luke Niccoli, the cut offers a sly callback: "I already gave
you bananas," she sings playfully, nodding to the cheerleader chant on her 2005 Pharrell
Williams-produced No. 1 hit, "Hollaback Girl." Sonically, "Let Me Reintroduce Myself" is also a
full-circle moment, with a sound that nods to her roots with No Doubt and life-long love of ska
and reggae.
Stefani discovered the genres in eighth grade and was galvanized to make music as a teen after
hearing second-wave UK ska acts Madness and the Specials. As "Let Me Reintroduce Myself" was
taking shape, she dug in and decided to research ska's originators, reading up on ’60s Jamaican
bands like The Skatalites. All the same, as dubby beats and breezy acoustic guitars course under
and around her laidback coo, Stefani confidently asserts her space in the modern musical
universe: "In case you forgot—no, I'm not records on your shelf."
"Let Me Reintroduce Myself" caps off a busy year for Stefani. In collaboration with fiancé Blake
Shelton, she had two No. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, "Nobody But You" and
"Happy Anywhere." Her festive holiday album, You Make It Feel Like Christmas, was reissued in
fall 2020 with two new songs, including an original written and produced by Ryan Tedder, "Here
This Christmas." Stefani wrapped her fifth season as a coach on The Voice where she coached
Carter Rubin to be crowned the season 19 winner.
But across all projects, Stefani is guaranteed to innovate. After three decades of new ideas,
color palettes, and creative ventures, you can count on Stefani to always do the unexpected—and
never let others’ expectations dictate her career moves or get in the way of her imagination.
