(00:01):
Do we have a treat for youor what this afternoon? I mean,
you, guys, I can't beginto tell you what a treat this is
for me and for you. Mindyhas been up with Cammy, I said,
chasing down Wolverines for Buckeye girls softballand they won. And Gail Hogan
(00:21):
is sitting across from me co hostingtoday. Hey Michayla and everyone out there,
nice to be here. Thank youso much forgetting for the invite.
I know I have tried to getGail multiple times over the last year.
Maybe well, when your retired lifedoes get in the way apparently, and
I mean you're half are you stillhalf retired? I see you on TV
(00:42):
all the time. I would say, half retired, still doing what I
want on my own terms. Whilehow can we all sign up for that?
I mean, like teach us please, But you've been traveling, I
think when I've tried to have youon when Mindy's been out right. But
Dan is not retired or is heretired. He's a retired judge, which
(01:03):
means you can be a visiting judge, which means you can help other counties
when they need an extra judge forwhatever. So he's still working around the
state and busy, in fact, too busy. I told him, we're
going to calm this down here alittle bit, dude. So does he
travel like Monday through Friday or howdoes this work? Depends on where the
case is. And sometimes it's justa hearing, a sentencing, a whatever.
(01:29):
Sometimes it's a plea other times it'sa trial. If it's a trial,
he could be there for a weekor two. Most of the time
he drives home at the end ofthe day, but there have been a
few times where he's so far away, like two and a half hours away,
he stays there. So I said, we're going to cut that stuff.
I've got plans for real, youknow, seriously, I said,
they can find a judge closer towhere that city is. There's eighty eight
(01:49):
counties in Ohio. Yes, workingfor the state, I am well aware.
Idea, you forget about that,And some are so small they still
only have one judge who does probate, juvenile, domestic, all of it,
all of it. And so yes, there's complications because I know everyone
in the county is so small. That's where Dan comes in, because they
(02:10):
have to recuse themselves for many reasons, or even some judge that may be
sick, and he's the only judgethere. So what do you do?
You have to go knock on somebody'sdoor and say can you help? So
it's a keeps his mind sharp,as he says, and he only is
doing a handful of cases. Hegoes, I don't have to manage anyone.
(02:30):
I go show up, I dothe case, I leave. I
mean that also is a beautiful thing. That is a beautiful I mean after
having to do that for many years, right in the role that he was
in, the roles he's been in. You guys, if you want to
call and say hi to Gail, feel free. I'm going to give out
the number six one four eight twoone nine eight eighty six. That's six
one four eight two one WTVN.Were you and Dan married before you started
(02:52):
your broadcast career. No, Imet him during my broadcast career in radio
year at six ten. I wascovering trials. I don't I mean nineteen
eighty one that it got hard forme to say. Nineteen eighty one,
I was here, I was coveringtrials, and I met him on a
(03:12):
trial when he was a prosecutor,a young prosecutor, which was funny because
last night we had our annual prosecutordinner of what we call old prosecutors.
Yes, and there were sixteen, you know, men and women and spouses
and talking about the old days, and there were lots of stories to go
around. And I feel like Ilived all those stories too, because I've
been around for a long time withhim. I feel like you had a
(03:34):
parallel relationship to someone that I workvery closely with right now. And you
know who I'm talking about, andI'll tell you here in a second,
and someone we worked with at Channelfour, like you and Dan. You
met him while he was a prosecutor, correct, Jim and Holly, Oh,
yes, yes, I work withKanneppa. So I mean they met
when he was a prosecutor and Danand Jim were prosecutors together. I figured
(03:55):
that was probably Colleen I worked together. So yes, there's a sinner there
for sure, Colleen Hellingdon, Yeahyou're talking about yeah, Ben Jim Caneppa's
so yeah you So you were youusing your maiden name. This is why
I'm asking this question because my sonwas just asking me a question about why
aren't you Thorpe? Why are youHunt, but you're Hogan and he's Hogan.
(04:19):
So how did this all work out? Do you change your name while
you were working in media? Idid, much to the consternation of the
news director at that point. Iwas at Channel six and he said,
people, and I'm like, nobodyknows me that much, and I'm young
and I don't want to go throughthe rest of my life without my maiden
name. So I put my footdown and I said, I'm thinking to
(04:39):
myself, he's not going to fireme over me changing my name. He
gave me a hard time over it, but in the end, I just
made that decision. And he gotso complicated. When you're still using different
names as you, I'm sure, well no, So I just made it
easy on everyone. And you're oneof the When I think of people though
who have changed their name in mediaor who haven't that women, I think
(05:00):
you're rare, really I do.I think Hollingsworth Hunt Dreyer, like I
think there's so many of us.Well, Colleen Gary is Marshall as he
is he is, and I don'tknow the timing of all that. You
wouldn't know that she was Marshall whenshe came. So I don't know.
It's a really good question. Butmy friend Kathy Little was Kathy Mayney and
she went by Kathy Maaneie Little formany years and then at some point she
(05:24):
just took the many away, whichis her maiden name, and she's just
Kathy Little. Yeah, but sheused that as a transition transition. I
was. Yeah. Christian asked metoday, He's like, why why are
you this? And I said, well, professionally, that's what I was
known for for twenty years almost,I said, so I kept it because
I was in media. But Iwill say Mikayla Thorpe when I when I
(05:46):
go like to the doctor's office andeverything else. But yeah, just I
don't know if there's that many ofyou. And so I thought that was
really unique. And I was like, oh, yeah, dal Or Galen,
Dan, I almost called you Daleand Dale dale Gan. There's your
for Dan and Gail Hogan. Soyeah, I was just I literally was
just having that conversation today speaking ofKathy Little. You all had a fabulous
(06:09):
time at hat day. We did. Thank you very much. Kathy Little.
She buys a table every year andsome She's been there for so many
years, doing so many things. She's been honored there several times, and
she loves the conservatory, so shegives back. In one of those ways
is buying a table at hat day, of which I get to benefit and
you look great because I loved it. I'm a guest, as she said,
(06:30):
you're a perennial. I goh,yeah, I'm your guest every year.
Yes, Kathy and I are besties. And I will say that if
you're lucky enough to get old enoughand you get to retire and you get
to travel, it's great to havetravel buddies. And she is mine and
her husband and our husbands get along, and that's also where we are find
or she had to find couples thatget along, but also your same idea
of a vacation, you know, and that can be difficult. So there
(06:53):
are travel buddies. I love.I love that because travel buddies are right.
It's not easy to find the rights. It's not even you can be
really close with people, but haveI had that happen one time, really
close with the family, but theyjust I thought they were like, go,
go go. They took their kidsto Africa, and I was like,
this is crazy that you're taking yourthree kids to Africa, come with
us to Michigan. And when wegot up to Michigan to our spots,
(07:16):
they stayed a lot in their hotelroom. Wow. And I'm thinking to
myself, you go to Disney andParis and Africa and like, and here
we are just in Saint Joseph,Michigan. But it's hard to get you
out of your room. And maybetheir idea of a vacation was We're gonna
lay back here by the lake. This is our idea of a vacation.
While it's not necessarily yours true becausewe do go a little bit. I
(07:40):
mean, we'd lay by the lake, but we go a little bit because
you gotta get downtown. You gottayou gotta get out and do things.
I used to We used to goup there when I was a kid.
We had relatives and grand Rapids. So going up to Charlevoi and and all
those places was how we spend ourvacations, you know, just for a
week at a lake, at alake, yep, and it's it's a
beautiful place. We're already booked forthis summer. But Kathy and Jeff and
(08:01):
you weren't they in media, Yes, that's how you met them originally.
Correct, you have done your homeworklate. I remember because I look at
you and I have talked to Kathy. I look up to both of you,
and I remember the stories. Right. I know Jeff and I know
Jeff too, and I madly respectJeff as well. So Jeff's a JP
Morgan and Kathy is at Worthington Industries. She just retired. She did December
(08:26):
thirty first, was her last,so she's been on a whooo. She
said, I'm celebrating it. Let'sgo to Saint Thomas, and I went,
okay, So she took me andanother friend and we went to Saint
Thomas to celebrate her retirement. Idid not go to Saint Thomas for my
retirement, but I'm hanging on hercoattails and I'm going with her. I'm
telling you, she's the best. She's a great friend. But I mean,
(08:48):
she is a person that goes hasideas, let's do this, how
about this. She's a gamer andI like that she's a gamer. So,
yes, she did retire and doinga little bit of nonprofit at this
point. But one of those thingswhere she's just retired, So will she
do anything else? Does she wantto do anything else, just like many
women in that position after they retire, what happens, you know? So
(09:11):
we after the break, are goingto have a little more of this conversation
with those of you who are retiredor maybe nearly retired, because Gail was
sharing a lot of people have questionswhen you get to that point, and
then you wonder should I have ananswer? And to find joan? Am
I a loser? I mean?Right? And so how like so I'm
(09:31):
I think I'm probably twenty years away. That's what I would think from retirement.
I'm about twenty years away most likely. I wonder how it will feel.
So we're going to have this conversationsix one four eight nine eight eighty
six. That's six one four eighttwo one at WTVN. Give us a
call, we'll have the conversation.Gail Hogan is in or just call to
say hi, if you want tolet's do yeah, right, Yes,
(09:54):
retirement is the subject in hot topics. How do you handle it? How
do you answer the questions as you'regetting near there? This is what matters
