Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Well.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
He played for the Knicks for three years, the MAVs
for twelve. He's now broadcaster for Dallas. Good guy Derek
Harper knows this game inside and out. I want to
start with New York. There is something magical. It's almost
like the lighting's different, the celebrities. When I watch the
Knicks play, it just jumps off television. And when you

(00:47):
have this team that's almost collegiate Villanova guys, it's just
incredible television. Get take me back to playing. I remember
those days you as a Nick, even though you had
four times the career in Dallas, do you have fond
memories of the intensity of New York, the celebrities and
all that is the mecca in New York.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
There's no question it's very difficult not to enjoy New York.
Column You know that for crying out loud year out
in Los Angeles, and it's sort of the same field,
if you would, when you compare the two cities, other
than the weather on my dad. But you know, I
was in New York undercover, and when I lived in

(01:30):
New York just had a lot of off the court opportunities.
And you couple that column with a winning basketball team
this time of the year, and it's actually surreal.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
When I think back on it.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I mean, I shared a locker with Messier the year
that the Rangers won in ninety four, and it was
absolutely amazing to be playing. And I'm like, Hugh, I'm
sitting up watching the Knicks in Indiana and it's takes
me back because of the atmosphere. I mean, Jalen Brunson
has uh, He's set the city on fire this year.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yeah, so everybody liked Brunson. His coach in college, Jay Wright,
said yesterday, he goes, I didn't see this coming. How
surprised are you or are you surprised by Brunson putting
up Michael Jordan and Jerry West numbers in the playoffs?

Speaker 4 (02:27):
You know, I'm a tad surprise that he's gotten to
this level.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
But the only way to get to this level, if
you would, is to work your craft, is to live
in the jim, is to spend so much time working
on your game that you don't have time for anything else.
And that's who Jalen Brunson is. I talked to the
guys when they signed Jalen, and I told them that
they were getting an all star tat of the player.

(02:52):
And of course you could hear tuckles, you could hear
the indecisiveness from people, but you know, I just know
the kid. I've been I was around for three and
a half years. I know Rick as well, and between
the two of them, man, they work smart, and they
work I mean resiliently, I mean constantly. And the other

(03:12):
thing that I'll say about Jalen is that he will
never in his career allow a misshot or a turnover
or something that goes wrong to deter him from being
who he is. He's very humble, He's sit fast on
being great and as a result, he's getting results to

(03:33):
help the Knicks maybe move through.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
The second round.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
So I like Luca, but I have said what concerned
me when he broke into the league. I said, I
see some I see some James Harden and Mellow Mellow
in terms of is he in great shape, is he
willing to defend? I think he's more I don't know
if he's more talent. They're both great. And then Harden,
I'm like, you can't have the ball in your hands
as much. Well, I saw a stat this morning, Eric,

(04:01):
the man's are eight and oh when it's a usage
rate like last night is under thirty percent. So I
can Lull. I say this before. I love ice cream,
I don't want it for breakfast. I can love Luca.
I don't want him to have the ball.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Constantly, so I don't.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
So how does that play in Dallas? Is that a
discussion that not only guys like me are having, but
in Dallas are people acknowledging you know what, little less
Luca is better Luca.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Well at just points to basketball being the pity me
of a team game. If you would, I mean, if
one guy is going to dominate the whole show, then
let him go out there by himself. I said that
in LA because there was always an argument when I
was in LA my last.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Year in the league, as to whose team it was.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
I said, well, it's Kobe's team, and Shaq's team only
let them go play against five guys. There's no need
for the other guys if you would, and I would
concur with that when the Mavericks have more than Luca
contributing offensively, defensively, whatever. When when it's that way, they're

(05:08):
not as effective as a team. And what happened is
Luca had to do so much early in his career,
and now that Kyrie has joined the fold and the
trades that we made at the at the before the
All Star break, you add all of those guys, the
pieces that we have gotten, and this team is Taylor
made to make a run. I mean they had some butterflies,

(05:31):
I think in the first game against the Clippers, but
all in all of Dallas is built just like Minnesota,
just like Denver and all of these teams that have
a chance to be successful this time of the year,
the Mavericks are right there. Nico Harris to me is
exec of the year being able to pull off the
trade that he pulled off, and I just think less

(05:52):
Luca means other guys are going to get an opportunity,
and that gives you more opportunity to be successful.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
With that question, be sure to catch live editions of
The Herd weekdays and noon Easter not a em Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
So it's always harder for me to project an NBA
drafted player than an NFL drafted player because I get
three or four years of watching the college football player

(06:24):
a lot of times international guys. I've never seen him play,
So I didn't watch Ant in college at Georgia, but
I watched a ton of YouTube stuff, and then I
watched him his first year and I'm like, well, he's athletic,
and there's something about in the last the playoff runs.
It's more refined, he's more efficient, just takes a little

(06:45):
better shots. I feel like I am watching it's like, oh,
this is the first chapter of the book, like the moment.
What do you see with Ant?

Speaker 3 (06:56):
I'll tell you. I'll tell you what I thought aitsionly
his first say year and a half as a player.
I saw a guy that could score the basketball at ease.
He's that athletic. He's developed into a awesome shooter from
the perimeter three point line. But I said to my
colleagues and people that I work with that he has
the potential to be really good.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
I didn't know how good.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Once he stops trying to score so hard, he's slowed down,
and once the game slows down for you, you're a
much better player.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
He's not trying to do too much.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
If you listen to Ant man talk now, you know
what he's talking about his teammates and how much he
trusts those guys. If they're open, I'm gonna make the
play to him. And that's when you know you've improved,
not only as a player, but the mental capacity has
come to fruition for you as a player. And I
think that's where Ant is. The game has slowed down

(07:51):
for him. He doesn't try to beat you by himself,
which is impossible to do anyway. But if you look
at all the great players now, including Lebron, the one
thing that separates all, though, is unselfish basketball plays. And
when you get that from your star, it changes the

(08:11):
whole dynamic of your team.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yeah, finally, Kevin Durant running through coaches, Lebron's running through coaches.

Speaker 4 (08:25):
It's incredible, right, It's amazing.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah, it's I don't love it, but I also understand it,
you know. So tell me, how do you feel about
kad Lebron just running through coaches. I thought. I watched
Darvinham this year. I thought he was fine. I thought
he had an inconsistent roster with multiple players who were
all over the map. I thought he did as well
as you could have. I thought they outplayed Denver for

(08:49):
most of the series. What do you make of this,
this carousel of coach firings that's now. I maybe it's
always been like this, but it seems like it's just
been sped up.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
Yeah, it has, And I feel bad for him.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
I feel bad for Frank in Phoenix because in the
past you were always you were you were giving the team. However,
you put that team together and you had an opportunity
to build something. You know, it's like a relationship, right,
you get into a serious relationship, you have to be

(09:23):
willing to build. And that's just not happening now because
you know why, Colin. I mean, the play us have
all the control that make all the money. And I'm
not knocking it by by any means. I'm not discussing
someone's pocket how much money they need, but with all
of what they get comes, you know, put your position

(09:45):
to call the shots. Viyron Scott said it best. Let
lebron coach. Let him coach the Lakers. I mean he's
making the decisions. You can Stevie Wonder excuse me, steviee.
But he he could see that. I mean, it's an
incredible thing. How you know, all all players ever won
it was leverages and now they have all deliveries. And

(10:07):
I think taking advantage of it a little bit personally.
That's just my thoughts.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
He's one of the broadcasters in Dallas, one of the
good guys, nicks sixteen years, all defensive guy, a class act.
I love seeing you once twice a year. Good for you,
and uh.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
Make it happen more often. I'm willing in April.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
All right, good Senia, all right?

Speaker 4 (10:31):
YouTube.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
He told me during the break. I said, you know
he's cutting back in his schedule. I said, well, you
don't have to go to Sacramento or Portland, you know,
up in the Northwest. And he said, Jake's Seafood in Portland.
You are kidding me. He goes every time I get
off that plane, all right, I go right to Jake's
in Portland. And by the way, they deserve the free advertisement.
It's where I go every time I've in Portland. Jmack

(10:53):
with the news.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
No, no, this is the herdline news.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
Start with the San Francisco forty nine ers. How about
that first round draft pick at thirty one, they picked up.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Florida receiver Ricky Pearsall.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
According to an anonymous NFL executive, he believes the Niner
view Piersaal as a player who can fill a similar
role to Puka Nukua, adding they wanted a route runner
like the Rams have in Puka.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
I like this pick up a lot colin this. This
forty nine er team is going to be loaded. I
saw an interesting article that.

Speaker 5 (11:27):
This is their last dance, that they're just gonna keep Debo,
They're gonna keep Ayuk, They're gonna go all in before
they have to make tough decisions on the receivers and
Rock Purty.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
Well, you know what's interesting is that, you know, I
saw people say, you know, Ricky Piersaal didn't beat man
and man coverage, But remember ninety five percent of the league,
ninety to ninety five plays zone coverage. It's really about
are you cognitively can you walk into this league beat
zone coverage, find the creases, learn the playbook and there

(11:58):
are very few guys that literally just have their route
tree down even three or four years in how many
great route runners there's several, but I think and Pooka's
really good. But you know, I think sometimes we get
too caught up in forty times. And my take is
the league's running zone. Find the holes in the zone.

(12:19):
Puka immediately was you know, he and Stafford had a
harmony immediately. So I mean, I listen, they've missed on
some receivers they've got now between Jennings Debo, I you pearsall.
They got the kid from Arizona in the fourth round.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
The Caffrey might as well be a receiver.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
Like So yeah, I mean, and I also think what
they're saying is we got a couple of year run
here on brock Purdy before we pay him. Let's make
it work. Let's give him as many weapons. I also
think what they're saying is you can only do so
much defensively in this league. Let's load up on offensive
skill people.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
I'm of the belief. And you look at their roster, Colin,
I don't know that there's a better.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Roster, you know, I think I think it's the best.

Speaker 5 (13:03):
And you could do that when your quarterback's on the cheap.
The question is, remember they lost to Funga in the
secondary last year. That obviously hurt significant. They lost the
linebacker in the Super Bowl to an Achilles, running onto.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
The second Baltimore thirds Detroit roster.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
I can't totally argue with that, But the New York
Jets are certainly up there.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
I know you scoffed. That's fine.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
You know there's some guy over at the other place
that's got them.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Neck and neck with the Niners best roster.

Speaker 5 (13:31):
I'm come on, he's analyzing all he's breaking down the
linebacker units.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
I think he lost power on the internet. I think
whatever that is next up?

Speaker 2 (13:40):
How about this? This is so cool?

Speaker 5 (13:41):
So obviously the Otani gambling scandal was a just unbelievably
bizarre well. Lionsgate TV is developing a scripted series based.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
On the events that have and are currently taking place.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
The show will follow Otani's rise, including signing his record
setting deal with the Dodgers and the news months later
that his then interpreter stole seventeen million dollars to pay
off his gambling debts.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
That guy's now going looking at major prison time.

Speaker 5 (14:08):
Colin listen, I don't think we have enough of these
cool sports stories on TV. Remember Winning Time with the
Lakers on HBO. How good was that? That was incredible?
I am fired up.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
For this Sotani show now obviously a year out or
what hap.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
I'd like to see a documentary too. I've never I've
always loved documentaries. There's never been a time in my
life with more documentaries. I swear to god. The Netflix crowd,
the streaming crowd.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
So you lean like the Patriots doc. Oh, there's all
these interviews.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
Scull tape documentaries over scripted stuff. But documentaries historically are
time consuming and don't pay off now because of the
streaming ecosystem that maybe they do economically payoff now for
the for the documentarians. But I would always take a
doc over outside of the occasional like Oppenheimer or something

(14:56):
like that.

Speaker 5 (14:57):
Let's stick to sports. But Friday Night Lights, you know,
that was a would I would take.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
The MJ doc and the Patriot doc over that easily.
I'm a docum.

Speaker 5 (15:05):
I mean the Friday Nights TV show is one of
my favorite TV shows that in the history of television.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
No, no, it's a great show. Yeah, based on the book
I'm not against script the TV, not at all. I
think there's I mean, ballers on HBO.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Oh God, Ballers, that's definitely definitely top.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Yeah, there's so I'm not against it at all. I'm
just saying there's something fascinating about documentaries when you go
back and give me twenty years of old video. But
they take so long. You have to get approval on video,
and that's you know, Major League Baseball probably wouldn't give
you a lot of approval on some of them.

Speaker 5 (15:38):
Well yeah, plus on this, like all the key Factor
guys are still playing with the Patriots doc ninety percent
of them.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
Were retired, right, so it made it a little bit easier.
Final story.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
The UFL's top two team square off tomorrow on Fox,
undefeated Stallions hosting the five and one Battle Hawks. AJ McCarron,
famous Alabama quarterback, returns to Alabama hoping to end the
Stallion's unbeaten season. McCarron thirteen touchdowns leads the league. Adrian Martinez,
who I am of the belief will be on an
NFL roster this fall. He's in the game. He's got

(16:11):
a big passing numbers and second in rushing yards.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
It should be a good game this weekend.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
I think, what's the Stallions don't lose, right, Yeah, that's
the team that doesn't.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
Lose, undefeated like this this show, we don't lose.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Jmack with the news.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
Well that's the news and thanks for stopping by it
the lie.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
Yesterday, incidentally, I had to get a drive home. I
was going to Uber and then j Max said well,
all take you home and I said, well, it's you
got to have to get off the freeway drop me off.
And he's like, no big deal, no big deal. A
car was kind of a mess. But I will say,
they're joking about this. There's my Uber driver. Oh I

(16:55):
really did appe tell them who you're on the phone with. No,
I don't want to get into that. Okay, but none
so very much appreciated I let you. I felt so
bad that I let you drop me off an undisclosed location.
I had to basically get a backpack and hike home
because I didn't want you to have to go through
the labyrinth of streets.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
And I was just being a nice guy.

Speaker 5 (17:14):
You want to ride Usually you say that and the
people are like, nahnah, it's good.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
I jumped.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
I look good. Offering and then you're like, you know what,
I'll take you up on that. I was like, all right,
you gotta clean the car.

Speaker 1 (17:25):
Look at those glasses. You look like you are a
muscle shirt away from being on Manhattan Beach. That you
look you you always look beach ready.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
I'm getting my car washed this weekend.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
It's gonna be seventies coming up like it's it's tank
top weather.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
Baby.

Speaker 3 (17:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
I always hear nobody wants to live in California. I don't.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
Yeah, we're talking the wrong people.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
That's right. All right, Tomorrow's headlines Today with my Uber Driver.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
Next, be sure to catch live editions of The Herd
Weekdays and Noone Easter not a Emphasis.

Speaker 6 (18:02):
Hey, I'm Doug Gottlieb. The podcast is called All Ball.
We usually talk all basketball all the time, but it's
more about the stories about what made these people love
their sport and all the interesting interactions along the way.
We talked to coaches, we talked to players, We tell
you stories. You download it, you listen to it.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
I think you like it.

Speaker 6 (18:23):
Listen to All Ball with Doug Gottlieb on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
Jmak years ago, when you were a young newspaper man
and you were out there with the hat and the
press badge and that, and you were out there, I mean,
just breaking stories. I think it was like some New
Jersey paper, Philly paper or something like that.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
Memory. I was an ink stained wretch.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Man in the day, Yeah, working for a fish wrap
and then all of a sudden you decided that that's
a dead end job. So you decided to start a blog.
You didn't tell anybody, correct except maybe family and friends.
You start a blog, I don't even know who you told,
and it became the big lead and then you sold it,
you know, basically Beverly Hills. It was your next destination.

(19:11):
So you came out here and you did some stuff,
and then we found this segment where we said, you know,
you're a newspaper man, a headline writer. You got clicks,
and so we've developed this segment which is run for
five or six years. I love it. And today you
are attacking the NBA and some rumors out there about
the off season. Very exciting. Are you ready to go?

Speaker 5 (19:32):
I got to just say yes, I am. That was
one of the nicest I mean it's like, you know
my biography?

Speaker 2 (19:37):
Are we that friendly? At this point I'm driving you around?
I now you know my bio.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
I just this is how I treat all my uber drivers.
Oh yes, it's called Wikipedia. All right, here we go.
Tomorrow's headlines today the first one, it's a good series,
thunder Mavericks. What's the headline?

Speaker 5 (19:53):
Yeah, I've been all in on this team all season.
I think they're going to the finals. The headline will
b board game MAVs played checkers while OKC plays chets.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
By the way, Chet Holmgren rough Game two last night.

Speaker 5 (20:07):
Looked a little bit big for the moment. I just
thought the Mavericks, you know, their depth came up big.
And what's so key with this one is Colin. They
went on the road score one hundred nineteen points and
Kyrie Irving does next to nothing. He had nine points.
That's a scary thought. If you're okay, see now you
go home. You get the role players. I think the
MAVs cruise in this series. I still have them in six.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
Luca looking healthy again.

Speaker 5 (20:30):
I think we're gonna come out on this show Monday,
and you're gonna have to lead with maybe the NBA
belongs to Luka Doncic.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
I don't think so. But here's hoping tomorrow's headlines today,
What a jug by the Celtics. Will it have any
staying power? What say you?

Speaker 2 (20:49):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
The Celtics. Boy, that's a brutal Game two loss. Again,
after the Game two loss against the Heat and thewelve
and a half point favorite and lost by twenty four
the choke City, the headline will be Boston baked, Cleveland
left crying in their Sleeveland.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
I've got Boston handily in this series. I'm sorry. Listen,
the Cavs get one win, that's fine. Maybe they sneak
their way to a second. I don't know.

Speaker 5 (21:13):
Donovan Mitchell's showing out trying to impress other teams, you know,
in case he doesn't want to be in Cleveland anymore.

Speaker 1 (21:17):
Question.

Speaker 5 (21:18):
But listen, Boston at off night shooting, I think they
were twenty two percent from deep. They're gonna be fine.
Derek White is not the next coming of whoever he
struggled to. Yeah, like you know, Jalen Brown over six
from three. It was basically Tatum and I think this
is a little underplayed. The stuff he was saying afterwards.
We're not a super team. We didn't have anybody top
five at MVP, we don't have the Coach of the Year.

(21:38):
We had two All Stars, and you know, he's right
about some of this stuff. But I feel like we're
getting an angry Boston team going to Cleveland, like they're
sick of these losses.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
I like Boston to go and win both in Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
Yeah, I agree. Tomorrow's headlines today, Now, this isn't interesting.
Clave Thompson one of the Splash brothers, much more of
a drip drip than a splash. Pars had another disappointing
postseason that was very brief. What's the headline going to
be on Clay?

Speaker 5 (22:07):
So you know a lot of people think Clay maybe Orlando,
maybe Lakers want him, stays in Golden State.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
I'm going off the board here, Colin.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
The headline will be Liver three Bell Philly fills crack
with Clay.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
How about this one?

Speaker 4 (22:21):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
I've been looking spending a lot of time this week
looking at potential big name stars that could go to Philly,
and I'm coming up kind of empty. What if they
look at the Minnesota Mark Minnesota model and say, you know,
they got two highly paid guys and they got defense
and wings. What if we go that route, we fill
it in. Instead of giving one guy fifty million, we
give two or three guys fifty five million. And what

(22:44):
if Clay is one of them. Clay alongside Maxi becomes
a shooter spread to the floor for MBD who can
eat underneath instead of being like three point Joel Embiid.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
And I think Clay going.

Speaker 5 (22:55):
East much better chance to get to the finals in
the East and the West, no question.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
I don't care. If the Golden State adds Gianni somehow, well,
then Klay probably wouldn't be there.

Speaker 5 (23:02):
But I do think Philly becomes an interesting destination for
a shooter and anyone who wants to have a chance
to get to the finals.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
Yeah. They also they do need somebody to get them
into their offense, which won't be a fortune.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
Could it be Maxy?

Speaker 1 (23:16):
No, again, I don't see him as that guy. I
see him as a He's a scorer and a two
more than a one. I mean, he can do that,
but he wants to shoot. He wants to score, and
I want somebody like Mike Conley. All right, how about
this Tomorrow's headlines Today another disappointing postseason for one James

(23:37):
Harden of the Clipper.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
This is interesting. I just looked it up. Turns thirty
five in August.

Speaker 5 (23:42):
His numbers this year way down by the way, sixteen
points a game, eight assists.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
Four years ago.

Speaker 5 (23:47):
This guy's leading the league in scoring. The headline for
James Harden will be pay per clipped. Harden barely holds
LA together. I think the Clippers have to keep him.
And it's interesting. Remember they didn't give Kawhi all the
money they could have. They're not looking to give Paul
George all the money he wants. I think they can
get Hardened on the cheap because Harden has to look
around and be like, what are my options?

Speaker 1 (24:08):
I don't think he has a lot because you just.

Speaker 5 (24:10):
Mentioned Mike Conley. Can James Harden be somebody's Mike Conley?
Tough defender, not really, not looking for his shot, being
a role player?

Speaker 2 (24:19):
Not really.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
He's like offensive, James Harden, I gotta get mine, and
I think he stays with the Clippers.

Speaker 2 (24:24):
I think Paul George is gone.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
We'll talk about her next But hard and staying it's
kind of a steadying force, you know.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
They surround him with good players.

Speaker 1 (24:31):
And they don't really have Westbrook off the bench, but
they don't really have a true facilitator. You know, They've
really got a good team deep wing defenders, some size,
they don't have a facilitator. And Hardened, to his credit,
can be a score. But he's also a pretty good
assist guy.

Speaker 5 (24:47):
Weren't they one of the best teams in the league
for like a two month stretch. Yes, So like there's
a world where it's like, Okay, we keep Harden. Kawhy
is going to be healthy, and we'll see what happens
with Paul George. But I think they got something there
with Harden.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
The guy that I'm most interested in tomorrow's headlines today
is the underrated Actually, Paul George. Where will he be
next season?

Speaker 5 (25:08):
So he's gonna have the most robust market out there
of anybody.

Speaker 2 (25:11):
I just looked as up. He turned thirty four last week,
so he's still I think he's in this prime.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
Yeah, I know he's at the end of it, but
he's in his prime. All right.

Speaker 5 (25:17):
This is a little off the board. The headline will
be too hot. Two handles.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
PG thirteen goes rated M for Miami.

Speaker 1 (25:26):
That's not a bad call. Now they get rid of Butler.

Speaker 5 (25:29):
While we were talking with Rachel Nichols, there's a lot
of stuff floating around Miami right now about Jimmy Butler.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
Pat Riley took some shall we say, unnecessary jab.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
That is work.

Speaker 2 (25:37):
They weren't jabs, they were shops like stay off.

Speaker 5 (25:40):
Social media, get healthy in play. And remember I just
looked at upcolumn. Jimmy Butler has kind of been a
bounce around guy six in Chicago, one and a half
in Minnesota that ended very ugly. One in Philly that
ended ugly. Butler has a hardball in him where it
ends ugly. What if he were they.

Speaker 2 (25:57):
Were to move him.

Speaker 5 (25:58):
You bring in Paul George and now it's like Paul George,
bam Adebayo, Keith Tyler, Hero, whatever you get for Butler
and Miami suddenly in the East can surge up again.
If I'm Paul George, I'm Klay Thompson. Do I want
to stay in the West? Colin It is good Webbin
Yama's coming up. We know the Lakers are gonna be there.
Minnesota like, who's okay soling out?

Speaker 1 (26:19):
No? I mean there there there is an argument to
be made that the path to the finals is like Lebron,
it's through the It's through the East, no question. And
that's what I've said about Boston is that both Boston
and the Knicks. The Knicks are a hobbled mess, really limited,
and yet they're going to win their second playoff series.

(26:39):
They're not. I don't know if they'd would have won
in the West, and I mean Boston. I think what
we we have over valued Boston because of how bad
the East is. And think about this year, Damon Yannis
both got hurt, Embiid was brittle, Jimmy Butler didn't play.
So the East was weak, it got weaker in the playoffs.

(27:00):
So it's nothing against the New York story, but New
York needs that. This is not they don't have enough
offensive dexterity.

Speaker 5 (27:08):
Yeah, that's why if you're like the Nick sixers are like, guys,
we're a player away from getting the finals.

Speaker 1 (27:12):
You know, we were talking this, you know, kind of
led the hour with you know, I would argue that
maybe the Celtics have two Pippins and no MJ is
that they don't have a Shack, a Bird, a Kobe
in their prime. And you watch Aunt Edwards just take
over games, and I think we take him for the
next five years, maybe over any Celtic. And my take is,

(27:33):
is Tatum Brown much more two Pippins than two Kobe's,
because you know, you make all NBA. It's like, but
I look at him and I'm like, I mean sometimes
Tatum's almost got like a number three guy mentality, you know.
I mean, I've seen years of it, and Brown's super talented,
but I don't consider him He's not in that Ant

(27:53):
class or the Luca class. So I think sometimes you
have to contextualize it and look around to sport and go, yeah, yeah,
this is the East is the weakest it's probably ever been,
and with injuries to Jannis and be Dame, it got worse.
So it's not a knock on the Knicks. It's like,
don't don't as a Nick fan look at this and say, hey,

(28:15):
the next step is the East should be just on
health and additions. I mean, I'm Paul George. I'd have
no problem going East.

Speaker 5 (28:23):
Can you tell me if the Knicks got Kevin Durant,
who's the favorite in the East next year? It's what
do they give up for anybody but Johnsen? Devincenzo and heart.

Speaker 1 (28:34):
No, I don't want to give up O G.

Speaker 5 (28:36):
Okay, fine, they're not giving up OG. They're giving up
Randall five picks. Mitchell Robinson, you know that I don't
want to give up O G.

Speaker 1 (28:44):
Brunson.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
And then who's the favorite in the East?

Speaker 1 (28:47):
Probably still Boston over the Knicks. Well, it depends on
what Philadelphia does if Paul George ended up there.

Speaker 5 (28:54):
This is like, it feels like the East should be
in an arms race right now to catch Boston, which,
as you noted, like maybe got fat on the eases here.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
Well, the interesting team's Philly because they have so much
camp space and draft picks. Now, it's not a great draft,
but again they're not looking for a right now great
player Philadelphia. If you could get Philadelphia to get a
couple of rotational guys that defend, If you could get
a couple of rotational guys not even be scores, just
length can play second guy off the bench.

Speaker 5 (29:23):
Is there a world where the Celtics say, hey, you
know what, we have two Pippins, Let's trade Jalen Brown
and see if we can, I don't know, find a
trio of like a Conley Jaden McDaniel's Nasrid type role
players somewhere else where.

Speaker 2 (29:37):
Now you've got seven guys.

Speaker 5 (29:38):
I don't know that Minnesota model is very interesting, depending
on how much of a run they make here, because
they've changed, they kind of changed things.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
The super teams are out calling that. I think that
era is kind of done right.

Speaker 1 (29:48):
Well, it's cyclical. Listen, the oven is working better than
the microwave. And if you take Lebron out, it probably
has my entire life. If you go, let's go to
the seventies. Well, the and the Sonics were slow bake,
and then you know the eighties, you know they had
you had Cedric and Parrish and Bird and then you
could add a Bill Walton later, but Magic inherited Kareem

(30:13):
and they had Norm Nixon. They would add pieces. But
the Spurs, if you look at most of the dynasties,
Miami is rare where they went out and tried to
microwave it. You know, let's go get Bosh and Lebron.
Most of the dynasty. The Warriors could add KD, but
they're big three. The soul of it was all homegrown. Yeah,
it was all of them. So that's that Denver same thing.

(30:36):
You can go get a Gordon. But in the end,
you know who your top two three players. So the
history of the league does not reward getting stars. It
worked with Lebron in Miami for four years, but that
was only two titles, and I mean it took a
great shot by Ray Allen or it may have been
one title. So you know, I think the history don't

(30:58):
don't look at Lebron and go mobility work. It hasn't worked,
mostly for KD, who was the second best player when
this stuff started really ramping up.

Speaker 5 (31:06):
I think that just shows how different Lebron and KD are.
Lebron brings on Kevin Love to join Kyrie in Cleveland.
They take down the greatest regular season team ever in
the seventy three one Warriors.

Speaker 2 (31:16):
Like I just I don't think.

Speaker 1 (31:17):
I don't know how Phoenix doubles down on this team.
Beal's not working. You didn't get a lot of buying
from Booker. With Frank Vogel, Budtenholzer is going to come
up with a lot of money and power, so you're
going to have to listen. I don't know how much
you can get from Kevin Durant on the market. You
can get a haul for Booker but I think Durant's

(31:38):
probably the one they move.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
Is Butenholzer taking that job. If they're trading Kevin Durant.

Speaker 1 (31:43):
Depends on what you get, well, I mean a lot
of it. I it depends on what you get, all right.
First things first, is around the corner? Is it no
NASCAR Craftsman truck qualifying? My bad, We'll see it Monday.
It's the herd
