Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Cody Cast. This is Cody Allen's podcast Dialing
is up here on the zoom is Walker Hayes. Not
just a great singer songwriter we've known for years, but
now a TikTok sensation. Uh. Indeed, he is gone viral
with his song fancy like little dance he does with
his daughter. I want to get to all that. Are
you at your house stair? Walker on the zoom here? No,

(00:21):
it's a smack okay, so cool? Is it a church?
What was that? I've got the keyboard on Oregon with
the cathedral ceilings and the keypole were going at the
same time. I mean, think of me a church today.
We'll be singing him number one five versus one, three

(00:43):
and five. All right, yeah, dude, I'm at uh, I'm
at smack right now. How you doing? Man? You having
a good day? Good? I'm good. I just excited to
talk to you. After all you are. You are not
only a TikTok sensation, sir, You're like America's favorite dancing dad.
If dancing Dad's on TikTok were an Olympic sport, you

(01:06):
would win gold, gold, gold medal maybe all the way.
You know, they should have. They should have added that
sport this year. It would have really elevated my stock.
But man, come on, dude, we're just having fun. I'm
just having fun being a dad. That's that's all that's
going on. Dude. It just we're so fortunate. Man this,

(01:27):
I feel like I saw you like a week ago.
The song just can't stop, won't stop. I don't come on,
It's insane. And I know you've worked so hard for it.
And as we talked about, like all that energy over
the years that you've put forth, all that good karma,
Let's let's be honest. You're such a good dude. All

(01:47):
of it leads to something, all of it hits a
tipping point, and a moment like this is what every
artist just praised for so um to happen happened to you.
I'm just so thrilled. I've been a fan for you
know this for you so no, dude, thank you. But
you know, Cody, I mean, can you and I complain? Man?
I mean our jobs, you know. I gotta say I

(02:11):
I don't get up every day to to have like
the number one song in the world. I really just
I really just and blessed. I'm I'm so lucky to
have my the job that I have, and the fact
that this can happen is super cool. It's gonna open
doors to, you know, obviously, more opportunities to make music

(02:31):
and collaborate with people and talk to bigger audiences and
share my life with bigger audiences. But man, I really
I can't really take credit honestly, le either, and she'll
she's glad to take some credit. Nah. We just honestly, man,
it was the this this could quite possibly be the

(02:54):
most uncalculated burst my career has ever experience. It is
it complete. It's literally like I put on a jacket
that day and a million dollars was in the pocket.
Like I, I I don't, I can't really explain it. Man.
We're trying to process. But in the meantime, we're having

(03:15):
a lot of fun and a lot of people are
doing the fancy like dance and a lot of stations
are playing it, and I jam it on my my
CMT radio live show and it sounds it just sounds
good coming out the speakers in the car. I just
love it. It's fits good with the windows down. I
tell you what else, man, I can't I can't like
give you any specifics, but there are some mad really

(03:38):
good ideas about collab collaborations like with remixes on this song,
and they will blow your mind, like it's insane. What
what the people were thinking about and talking to Yeah,
we're ready for it, so real quick. Let's go back
to the leader for a second. Uh you are, as
I said as a dad, Did she think you were

(04:00):
cool with the dance or did you have to break
down some How? Have you broken down the walls so
well with your kids, especially teenagers? I mean, how have
you done it? Because not every dad can can break
down that wall to have that kip you have with
your kids. I got a lot of great advice from
some great examples. Um as our kids were becoming we're

(04:21):
beginning to be teenagers, and you know, I think there's
a point in your kid's life, you know this where
you realize that you didn't have kids to get anything
in return, you know what I mean. Like, I think
when they're little, you're like, oh, you know, they love
on you, and um, you know, they admire you, and

(04:41):
then they hit the stage where they realize like you're
just a dude, you know. And I think I think
as parents it's good for us to embrace that and go, Yeah,
I am just a dude, and I make mistakes all
the time. And you know, when Leila slams the door upstairs,
I try to remind myself to just go and knock,

(05:03):
you know, and pursue her. And I don't know, dude,
I mean, I just try to be completely transparent. That's
funny with my kids. See what I did. I try
to be transparent with my kids and not act like
I know anything that they don't. And um, and my

(05:24):
my kids and I were both quick to say sorry
and and we communicate as much as I can. You know, Hey,
it's not easy. Not teenagers aren't the greatest at communicating,
but who is you know at that age? And um man,
I try really hard and I mess up a whole lot.
But um, one thing I do with Leela is I

(05:45):
never say no to a TikTok. If she wants to
do a dance, I am gung ho, and if and
if she wants me to help help create it, I'm
gung ho and I I I always say yes to that.
And uh and um, I'm glad I did. Yeah, yeah,
you're no kidding. Um And now not only are you
changing you know, things with hits, but also uh, you're

(06:09):
changing the whole menu with Applebee's. They're bringing back the
Oreo shake now, right, dude, if if those just say
one thing at my funeral, will people just say he
brought the Oreo shaped back. Just that's it. That's all
I want you to say. Um dude, I am. I

(06:29):
am so excited about that. Um that it that went away.
Honestly like the shake it did and for all of
you like it. If it weren't for me, it wouldn't
be coming back. So you know, hey, dude, I'm really
really thrilled. I love I genuinely, not not not gonna lie.

(06:49):
I love Applebee's. I am. I have always had a
bourbon street state. I've never changed. I don't even know
what else they have. I just get the urban street
state and always have since I was a teenager. And
for all those people who are inquisitive, man, they have
really partnered with us, and the relationship is so organic

(07:12):
and makes so much sense. It's funny. I can tell
fans of rooting for me, they're like, oh, you're you
got it, you got your working with Applebees, and they're
they're excited for me, So thank you guys. Yeah, and
I love the TikTok of the woman coming out. I
guess she was an applebee. She does the dance and
shot comes out the door. What did you did? That

(07:33):
blow your mind? At first? Somebody saw what did you
think of that? Mom? Well, you know, got through my head.
I was like, did she know that? Was shocked because
she just kind of kept dancing. And I was like
I would have walked that way, you know, and followed
him and gotten his autograph. But what a perfect timing
that was. And do you know that? That's what's amazing, man,

(07:53):
is watching everybody's videos, the spin they put on it,
what they're doing in it, who's in it, um it,
It never ceased. It's too amazing. But that one, that
one got me about surprise. I was like, good Jack, Yeah,
I know you're there are making music today at smack,
and I am I'm curious because you said this. I

(08:14):
think I heard it a couple of days ago there
because of fancy like you're trying hard not to try
hard make it happen again. How is that going in?
Is that difficult to try hard to not try hard
because fancy like you weren't trying for yes, yes, I
mean it it is. It's it's like, um, it's like

(08:35):
you you know you when you find you finally get
somebody like accident. I don't know. I related to like
Laney and on his first day wasn't really planned. We
just kind of landed there. You know. There was no like, hey,
will you go out with me? But then when we
were there, it was like I felt this pressure like Okay,
it's time for me to be really cool, like I've

(08:56):
got a keeper, and so that's you know, you know
I'm saying. And so that's how I feel, is like,
and that's how I felt when you broke up with me.
And and really anything that you do that draws and
new people to you, you're like, oh crap, we gotta
keep them now, you know. And so but dude, my
team and my wife, especially Laney, she just reminds me

(09:21):
like fancy like didn't happen from any Like there was
no flexing, there was no like clinching, crawl, clawing, scratch.
It was just very peaceful, you know, very peaceful creative headspace.
And so it's like that's easy. I can do that again,

(09:42):
Like I cannot I'm great at not trying, but you know,
it's just hard at like, it's just hard to because
when you come in, you're like, oh god, next song
has to be just as fancy like. But hey, let's
call let me say this out loud. I will never

(10:03):
do fancy like again. Like if anybody's expecting that, I'm
sorry that against like you know you'll never do for
me as a fan. I mean, I just you'll never
do you broke up with me or shades or beer
in the fridge again, all these looking back or just
like classics Walker Hay song and so at the same

(10:25):
is true. I want people to check out country stuff too,
because you've got ja going on there, Carly Pierce, I
mean some great collaborations. Um So I hope people are
diving into like the full collection now because there's so
much good stuff there, so much good ship. Shall I say,
as see what you did there, man, dude there, thank

(10:47):
you for saying that. And I have loved the new
fans that fancy Like is bringing in. I've really enjoyed here.
And then say, hey, you know, I came for fancy
Like and I found Beckett or I found a lot
of people well finding beer in the fridge. It is
funny you mentioned that that that songs had a resurfacing, since, um,

(11:07):
that's fancy, like, so that's cool man, that I was
that I had all that wait for everybody, you know, yeah, totally. Um,
back to school's coming up. Um, so what does that
mean for your family? Kids? I know they're probably anxious
to get back in the in the rhythm or are
they anxious to get back What kids are you talking about?
I was about saying this is what we homeschool and

(11:30):
what what back to school means is I just have
to sit and listen to my kids wine about going
back to school, and uh, I'm sick of it. I'm like, guys,
it's just a part of life. Like you have to
go to school. You there's no there's no out, there's
no like loophole unless you just fail, you know. But yeah,
I'm in the world. Do you home school? I I don't.

(11:52):
I mean, one kid is a lot for a lot
of people. I mean this past years proven with zoom
classes and whatever that. You know, one two kids, it's hard,
But how many do you have? We have six? Six?
How how do you old school? Dude? It's it's uh
it's an interesting it's an interesting institutional land. He runs
in our house, and uh, everybody does it on their

(12:15):
own time. I will say, it's really produced, like some initiative.
And my kids, you know, I mean they some of
them are finishing at midnight and some of them get
up and get it done, you know. But they all
do it differently, and they excel in different areas. And
who knows, man, we'll see how bad we messed up
soon before we know. So I can answer that question

(12:39):
for you really good. About ten years when they're all
living at home with their boyfriends or girlfriends, you know,
or whatever. And I'm gonna let you get back to work.
Thank you for a few minutes here, and uh, I'll
let you get back to not trying. Yeah, I'll try
that all right. Well, to take care. I'm gonna see

(12:59):
in your copye that book too. I'll get your drinks. Yeah,
that you'll you'll love it. I think when you have
time when all this, uh, when the holidays hit, you
maybe want to read a book or dude, I read
I read a ton on the road, So give it,
give it up, come on, okay, we'll do it, all right,
take care, I'll good to see you, my buddy. This
