Music was not the livelihood for this Venetian composer. He learned the violin from his father and made his home the center of weekly musical concerts. During these concerts his own compositions were performed and frequent visitors included Gasparini, Lotti and later Tartini. Marcello did not publish many works but his "Oboe Concerto in D-mol" was his best known composition probably because it was transcribed by J.S. Bach for the keyboard.
