André Ekyan

Biography

b. André Echkyan, 24 October 1907, Meudon, France, d. 9 August 1972, Alicante, Spain. A self-taught clarinettist and alto saxophonist, Ekyan became well known in France in the early 30s. He also played in London, with Jack Hylton, and made many recordings. The musicians with whom he worked included Django Reinhardt, recording with him in the late 30s and again in 1950. He also played with Coleman Hawkins, and Benny Carter. A secure and competent player, Ekyan was important in helping spread swing era jazz styling throughout France and other parts of Europe.
