When British Christian rock outfit Delirious? disbanded in 2009, lead singer Martin Smith went solo, releasing a handful of EPs. After performing with Jonny Bird (guitar), Steve Evans (bass), Sarah Bird (keys), and Reuben Harsant (drums) on his solo releases, Smith brought them all together in 2015 to form Army of Bones. Keen to shed the unfortunate image that is associated with worship bands, the group decided to keep the faith message in the background, and instead let the music do the talking.
