The members of Boys Don't Cry had all variously played with Sad Café, Andy Brown, Jackson Heights, Byzantium and Mike Oldfield. Nick Richards, Brian Chatton, Nico Ramsden, Mark Smith and Jeff Seopardi had first played together in an earlier incarnation of the group known as the Jazz Sluts. With unlimited studio time owing to Richards' ownership of the Maison Rouge studio, their recording career began in 1983 with ‘Heart's Bin Broken'.
