b. Walter L. Cagle, 8 February 1936, Concord, North Carolina, USA. Cagle was raised in the Children's Home at Winston-Salem and when old enough, he volunteered for the US Air Force. He grew to enjoy country music but had no serious thoughts of being a singer until after his Air Force release in the late 50s. He moved to California and with some assistance from singer Wynn Stewart, he signed with Capitol Records. In 1963, he had Top 30 hits with ‘Your Mother's Prayer' and his version of Stewart's ‘Sing A Sad Song' - the song that a month later became Merle Haggard's first hit. ...
