China María (María Cuellar Ávalos) is a Peruvian singer of huayno, perhaps the country's most famous folk idiom. María started performing in fairs and festivals at a very early age, and moved from Apurimac to Lima when she was only 13 in order to become a professional musician. In Lima she met requinto player Juan Pipa, with whom she formed a duo that would soon revolutionize huayno music.
