As a Norwegian composer and heir to Grieg, Sinding initially studied the violin a the University of Leipzig. His talent for composition, however, soon became apparent and he stopped studying the violin. His techniques, harmonies and style betray the influence of both Wagner and Liszt. Compositions declare fully embodied harmonies with quick and sometimes disconcerting modulations.
