Before moving to Brooklyn in 2011, the members of indie rock trio Daytona all played music together in college music Mecca Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Migrating separately, guitarist Hunter Simpson (also a member of Brooklyn folk/punk band Wild Yaks), bassist Jose Boyer, and drummer Christopher Lauderdale reconnected in New York and began gigging and recording as Daytona.
