Edison Machado was a self-taught Brazilian drummer. Inventor of the samba o prato style (the samba beat at the cymbals), he was an intrinsic part of the bossa nova movement from its inception. Between 1957 and 1960 he was a member of Turma Da Gafieira alongside Baden Powell and Sivuca. In 1962 he joined guitarist Luiz Bonfa's band for O Violão E O Samba. 1963 was a busy year: he played on Stan Getz and Laurindo Almeida's eponymous album, with Antonio Carlos Jobim on The Composer of Desafinado Plays, and with Os Bossa Três on their first two albums.
