Born Ruth Evelyn Tyler to a deacon's family in St. Louis, Missouri, Evelyn Turrentine-Agee is a lifelong performer and charting gospel vocalist. She began singing publicly with her father at age three, eventually becoming part of her family's female gospel group the Tylerettes and, later, groups such as the Gospel Echoettes and the War on Sin Choir. She married Chris Turrentine while earning a degree at the University of Detroit and, part of a large family herself, went on to have a double-digit-sized household in her adopted city of Detroit, Michigan.
