Alfano studied privately with Longo, Nardis and Serrao at the Conservatorio di S Pietro a Maiella, Naples and later in Leipzig with Jadassohn. For a short time he worked as a pianist in Berlin. He spent most of his career as a professor of composition and opera and as an administrator at conservatories throughout Italy.
