Gary Bartz is a composer, saxophonist, bandleader, and early architect of jazz-funk. He debuted with the Max Roach/Abbey Lincoln band in 1964, followed by stints with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Charles Tolliver, and McCoy Tyner. In 1970-1971 he recorded and toured with Miles Davis. Bartz formed NTU Troop in 1970. They released seven jazz-funk-soul fusion albums between 1970 and 1974, including Follow the Medicine Man and I've Known Rivers.
