b. Kai Peter Anthon Nielsen, 10 April 1906, Hørsholm, Denmark. After playing other instruments, Ewans chose the alto saxophone in his late teens, later also playing clarinet. He played in several bands and also formed groups under his own leadership including a big band in the mid-20s. Late in the decade he toured Europe, continuing into the 30s as a band leader. He also played with visiting Americans including Benny Carter.
