Biography

b. Margaret Tate, 17 April 1888, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, d. 26 May 1976, London, England. Musically inclined from an early age (her half-brother was songwriter James W. Tate), Teyte had a pure soprano voice and studied formally in London and Paris. She made her concert debut in Monte Carlo in 1907 and the same year debuted in Paris at the Théâtre National de l'Opéra-Comique. Her breakthrough came when she took over from Mary Garden the role of Mélisande in Claude Debussy's Pelléas Et Mélisande, a task for which she was prepared by the composer himself. In 1910 s...
