A protégé of Michael Tilson Thomas, Marek Štilec is a stalwart figure among the younger generation of Czech conductors. He has a large catalog of recordings on the Naxos label.
Štilec was born in Prague, then in Czechoslovakia, on July 18, 1985. His family was musical, and he enrolled at the Prague Conservatory as a violin student.
