The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is Australia's oldest professional symphonic ensemble, having been founded in 1906. It is also arguably the most versatile, with a performing repertory and recording catalog that includea everything from standard orchestral works to unusual Australian contemporary pieces to pop and cinematic music. After many recordings for Australia's ABC Classics and for Britain's Chandos label, the orchestra established its own Melbourne Symphony label in the 2020s. The album Gustav Holst: The Planets (and Earth) appeared on that label in 2025.
