Mombojó was formed in Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco, in 2001 by the bandmembers Felipe S (vocals), Chiquinho (keyboard, sampler), Marcelo Campello (acoustic guitar, cavaquinho), Marcelo Machado (electric guitar), Rafa (flute), Samuel (bass), and Vicente Machado (percussion). Already in 2002 the teenage band drew the attention of Brazil's top music critics, such as Sílvio Essinger, and threw their inspired performances on music events and festivals in Recife.
