Born into a family where music was always nearby, Neil Cleary started singing from an early age, singing Gilbert & Sullivan songs as his father played piano. In his teenage years, Cleary became interested in folk music and was influenced greatly by Bill Morrissey and Richard Thompson. After moving to New York City, the musician joined groups such as the Pants and Famous Potatoes. He was also involved in the Elephant 6 collective, performing a variety of roles.
