After playing guitar early in his career, much of Herbolzheimer's subsequent playing was on trombone, although he is perhaps best known as a bandleader, composer, and arranger. Throughout the 60s Herbolzheimer was frequently to be found playing in orchestras in theatres and recording and broadcasting studios.
