Among the leading "young" American pianists from the 1960s, Ralph Votapek won the first Van Cliburn Competition in 1962 and went on to make numerous acclaimed appearances at Carnegie Hall and with the major orchestras of Chicago (16 times!), Philadelphia, New York, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, London, St. Petersburg, Lisbon, and many others.
