Formed in New York, USA in 1972 by Louis Bouzo (b. 29 June 1948, San Juan, Puerto Rico; bongos) and timbales player Johnny Almendra (both previously with Johnny Colón's band). Tambo played a mixture of straight-ahead salsa, Latin jazz and a few ballads, with a repertoire of Latin classics associated with artists such as Tito Puente and Tito Rodríguez (the idea behind the band was to pay tribute to the music which had the greatest influence on Bouzo and Almendra).
