It's been a busy 2016 for17-year-old Bea Miller. After releasing her top 10 Billboard 200 debut album Not an Apology last year, the singer/songwriter from Maplewood, New Jersey is back with a brand new single called "Yes Girl," has been working on her second album, and has been supporting Selena Gomez on her "Revival Tour" -- during which she has already been sharing some of her new songs.
We recently caught up with Bea when she dropped by iHeartRadio HQ in New York City during an exclusive interview. She talked to us about "Yes Girl," what it was like being on tour with Selena, and new music that fans can look forward to. Check it out below:
On the meaning behind her new single "Yes Girl":
"'Yes Girl' is probably the most important song I've ever written, to me. Not probably, definitely is the most important song I've ever written, just for myself because I wrote it when I was really having a hard time with allowing people in my life to be really controlling over me, and to kind of make me feel like what I was, wasn't good enough by itself and that I needed to be other things, and kind of put them before myself. And there are times where you need to prioritize other people in their time of need, when you are doing okay, but you also have to remember to stay true to yourself, and I think that I needed a song to remind myself that when I sang it. And not only just to remind my fans and to help them get through certain things, but I wrote that because I needed a boost and I needed to boost myself up. So that song's really important to me."
On her favorite lyric in "Yes Girl":
"I really like the opening line. 'I could tell you what you want to hear because the truth is always in the way.' I feel like that is something everyone can relate to. You kind of tell people what they want to hear or you tell them the truth, and either one can go horribly wrong. I think that sometimes the truth gets in the way because you're afraid of it, and you end up telling somebody what they need to hear and what they want to hear instead of what they should hear; the truth. And I think it's really hard sometimes to just, especially when you're upset with somebody and they've done something to hurt you, it's really hard to kind of admit that to them, and to tell them that they've done something that hurts you and to stand up for yourself. I think it's a strong message to start the song with."
On what it was like touring with Selena Gomez:
"That was amazing. Her entire crew is just so amazing. They're just such excellent people, so much fun. I love being around my band and being able to sing in front of people that I originally wouldn't have been able to sing in front of. Every tour, when you tour with another artist, you kind of get to experience their fans as well as your own. And it's really interesting and it's really cool to go on Twitter afterwards and see all these people that were like, 'I never knew Bea Miller before, and now I saw her on the Selena tour and I think she's really awesome.' So it was really awesome releasing my new music for them, because I actually got to sing some of my songs before I even released them. That was really cool to get a reaction before I even put it out, just to see how everyone felt about the songs. So I had a really good time. It was really amazing."
An update on her new music coming out:
"I will be putting out new music. I've been writing music nonstop. I've been writing music nonstop pretty much, with just a break in between for tour, but pretty much nonstop since November of last year, so I'm working really hard. I'm trying to get music out for you guys. Um, but I, uh, you guys, as in like, they're there, but um, I'm trying to get music out and, um, it's just taking me a bit because I really want to focus on it, hone it in and make it really what I want to present to everybody. But you can expect an album some point soon (laughs)."
