The Weeknd - Starboy

Over the last few weeks, The Weeknd has been teasing something via multiple cryptic posts on social media. Not to mention word of a possible Daft Punk collaboration dropped when a Republic Records executive said the trio had studio time set up. Well, it looks like music was indeed born out of that studio session, because the Canadian-born, Grammy-winning singer has released a new song called "Starboy," and it features the electronic production duo.

"Starboy" is the title track and first single from The Weeknd's forthcoming third studio album of the same name, which is set to be released on November 25th via Republic Records. The song is a perfect blend of The Weeknd's unmistakable voice and vibe, using the piano throughout the song, and the robot duo's signature influence in the chorus. Abel sings "I'm a Starboy."

News of a possible collaboration between The Weeknd and Daft Punk broke last month, when during Billboard's video series "Hitmakers Roundtable," guest on the segment Republic Records VP/head of urban A&R Wendy Goldstein let it slip that the singer and the production duo had a studio session coming up. She said, "Actually, we have a session coming up in two days with The Weeknd and Daft Punk. I’m a massive Daft Punk fan, and this is the first time that I’ve actually been involved with an artist who’s going to go and work with them."

Also, a few days prior to this revelation, The Weeknd had posted a photo to Facebook featuring two Daft Punk-like robot figurines sitting on top of a speaker. Not to mention, his Instagram was updated with "Starboy" written underneath his @abelxo handle.

The Weeknd released his sophomore album Beauty Behind the Madness just last year in 2015, which featured hits like "Can't Feel My Face," "The Hills," and "In The Night," among others. The album, and a few of the songs from the record, earned him seven Grammy Award nominations last year, of which he won two -- one for Best Urban Contemporary Album, and the other for Best R&B Performance for his hit "Earned It." The song, which was featured in the Fifty Shades of Grey film, was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Now, just a year later, the R&B star is getting ready to drop another new album. This week, he tweeted out the album cover (shot by photographer Nabil Elderkin) and title Starboy, followed by a similar photo along with the message "I come alive in the fall time." Both photos show a very different hair style, for The Weeknd, trading in his unique signature hair for a shorter 'do.

In a recent interview with VMAN, The Weeknd describes his forthcoming record as "the best-sounding album [he's] ever done." He also cited new inspiration for Starboy, telling the magazine, “There are new inspirations on this album ... The production feels aggressive but still sexy. The Smiths, Bad Brains, Talking Heads, Prince, and DeBarge play roles."

The iTunes pre-roder link shows 18 songs on the new album, one of which is "Starboy," and the other -- track 3 -- is a song called "False Alarm." What else can we expect from this new album Starboy? Looks like only time will tell... but based on his new song we are HERE for it.
