October 18, 2016
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the nominees for the Class of 2017, and it’s a very diverse list.
Along with the usual rock acts, Tupac Shakur, Janet Jackson, Chaka Khan, and Chic are in the running, representing for Hip-Hop, R&B, and Soul. Hip-Hop acts Run-D.M.C., Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and most recently, N.W.A., have all been inducted into the Rock Hall.
Rock bands The Cars, The Zombies, Jane’s Addiction, Pearl Jam, Journey and Yes are up for nomination and the Rock Hall has selected some folk, electronic and pop musicians like MC5, Joan Baez and Kraftwerk.
Rounding out the wide array of nominees are Depeche Mode, Bad Brains, J. Geils Band, Joe Tex and Steppenwolf. Bands become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their debut album.
Now, 800 artists, historians and music industry insiders will vote for who will make it in to the Hall. You can also have a say – for the fifth year in a row, fans will get to vote as well. Head here to pick who you think should be honored. The top five artists will make up a “fan’s ballot” that will count as one of the 800 that determine the inductees.
The Class of 2017 will be announced in December and inducted in April in Brooklyn.
