Just a day before the release of her brand-new album, Joanne, Gaga kicked up her promotional circuit for the project with even more interviews. Asked what she thought about being compared to Madonna during one sit-down, the pop titan went off, delivering an eloquent, but stern response about their contrasting artistry. "Madonna and I are very different. I wouldn’t make that comparison at all. I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna. She’s a nice lady and she’s had a fantastic huge career," she said, before alluding that that pop vet doesn't throw as much of herself into her art as she does.
"She’s the biggest pop star of all time, but I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours, and hours a day in the studio," she urged. "I’m a producer, I’m a writer. What I do is different. I’m not just rehearsing over and over again to put on a show. There’s a spontaneity in my work. I allow myself to fail. I allow myself to break. I’m not afraid of my flaws. There are major differences between me and her. I just will not be compared to anyone anymore. I am who the f**k I am, and this is me. My life story is my life story."
Madonna vs. Lady Gaga is a boring and tired narrative that the media needs to stop focusing on, but that doesn't go without saying that Mother Monster appeared to not take the comparison as a positive. Meanwhile, on that very same day, Madonna was one of the few nominees for the 2017 Songwriters Hall of Fame. In case Gaga forgot, Madge has writing credits on hits like "Into the Groove," "Papa Don’t Preach," "Like a Prayer," "Vogue," "Frozen," "Music," "Hung Up," "4 Minutes" — and that's just to name a few.
