NYC Teacher Earns $94K Doing Nothing

David Suker, who spent 15 years as a New York City teacher helping teenagers in the Bronx earn their GEDs, was fired after he got into an altercation with police during the Occupy Wall Street protests. Suker appealed his firing, and won, having to only pay a $7,000 fine. Since being reinstated he has done no work, but continues to collect his salary of $94,000 year.

After winning in court to get his job back Suker was put in the Absent Teacher Reserve. The Absent Teacher Reserve was meant to help teachers displaced by closed schools keep teaching, but that is not how it has been used. According to the New York Post, the Absent Teacher Reserve "has become a dumping ground for those the DOE fails to fire in termination hearings." The cost to New York City taxpayers is about $100 million per year.

Now David Suker is suing to get off the ATR, so he can get back into the classroom.
