Rozes Interview

You may know Elizabeth Mencel -- AKA Rozes -- from her chart-topping hit "Roses" collaboration with The Chainsmokers, but the 23-year-old musician from Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania (a suburb of Philadelphia) has released a brand new single herself called "Under The Grave."

"Roses" became an enormous hit, with the collaboration hitting No. 1 on the US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart, No. 3 on the US Mainstream Top 40 Chart, No. 4 on the US Rhythmic Chart, and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the success of the single, Rozes dropped her own solo seven-song EP (her debut) on February 14th, 2016.

Now, with her "Under The Grave" release, the singer/songwriter/musician has a lot more in store for fans. She tells us,  "I definitely plan to release an album eventually. I think we're going to do a couple of singles first, and then wrap it up with an album. I'm also writing for other artists, so it's getting busy. But, it's good busy."

Five Facts You Need To Know About Rozes

We got to know a lot about Rozes when she stopped by iHeartRadio HQ in New York City for an exclusive interview. We learned about the meaning behind her stage name, the inspiration behind her new single, her musical inspirations, and more. Check it out below.

1. Her moniker "Rozes" comes from her grandmother's name.

"My grandmother's name is Rose, and she's the person I would stay with when my older brothers were at school or my parents were at work. She would make me sit down at the piano, and we would sing and play together. She was just my musical rose, so I wanted to be hers."

2. "Under The Grave" is about an open apology to her friends.

"'Under The Grave' is an open apology to my friends. Life has been getting a little crazy, and I've still been learning how to adjust, and learn how to balance time between work and friends. Something happened back home and I wasn't there, I couldn't respond quick enough. I didn't know how to react. Whatever the excuse I could came up with. It just I wasn't there when I should have been. So I wanted to write a song that was like, 'look I didn't throw myself under the bus for you because I should've been there for you,' kind of thing."

3. She plays several instruments including the clarinet, saxophone, flute, and guitar, and many of these she taught herself how to play.

"I play piano, guitar, clarinet, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute, and I sing. There's a big music room in my house at that I grew up in, and I just wanted to explore every instrument that was in it. So I just picked them up and did it. Clarinet, I taught myself, flute I taught myself, guitar self taught, and then saxophone and voice I was trained. And piano, I was trained."

4. Her musical taste includes everyone from Kings of Leon, to Sia, to Gwen Stefani.

"I love listening to Catfish And The Bottlemen, The Head and the Heart, Kings of Leon, Sia, Gwen Stefani -- I really love every type of music there is."

5. Her collaboration "Roses" with the Chainsmokers was spawned via Twitter.

"We met on Twitter. They followed me, I guess they found a song I did for this Australian DJ, Just A Gent, called "Limelight." They followed me and then I followed back, and then they messaged me. They slid into my DM's, essentially. They're just like, 'Hey we loved your voice. We'd love to work with you.' So, a couple of months later we're in the studio together in Drew's apartment, writing 'Roses.'"
