The British Aerospace 146 Avro short-haul jet that crashed into the Andes, killing 71 people, ran out of fuel according to recordings from the cockpit. The New York Daily News reports that the pilot can be heard telling air traffic control the plane was out of fuel and had a "complete failure, electrical and gas" while asking for permission to land.

The plane was about 8 miles from Medellin airport when it crashed. The plane was flying at an altitude of about 9,000 feet when air traffic control lost contact with the piloit.  According to ABC News, the plane's tail "clipped the top of a mountain, and the rest of the fuselage slid down onto the other side of the slope."

The plane was flying the Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense to Columbia for a championship match. 6 people survived the crash.
