Shawn Mendes sang “Treat You Better” on this week’s “SNL.” The song is the first single off his album Illuminate. For his first performance on the show, he sang “Mercy.” See the video below of Shawn Mendes’s performance of “Treat You Better” on “Saturday Night Live.”

As Gossip Cop previously reported, this is the first time the 18-year-old Mendes has been the musical guest on “SNL.” He has, however, performed “Treat You Better” before on live TV during the Much Music Video Awards and last month’s American Music Awards. Mendes also sang the song on the “Today” show and the “The Tonight Show.” The video for “Treat You Better” features a woman in an abusive relationship, with Mendes as a guy who doesn’t understand why she doesn’t leave her man for him.

In the video, we see the woman hurt a number of times. At the end of the video, the number is shown for the National Domestic Violence Hotline. To date, the video has been watched 442 million times.

“Treat You Better” reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also hit number one on the Adult Top 40 chart, three on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, eight on the Adult Contemporary chart and 17 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.
