Lips Restaurant Owner Says He Was Attacked For Being Gay, Blames Donald Trump

February 15, 2017

Mark Zschiesche, co-owner and founder of the famed Lips Drag Queen Showplace Restaurant and Bar, claims he was attacked for being gay earlier this week while traveling to one of the chain's locations in California.

Zschiesche told CBS News 8 that the hate crime occurred on Sunday morning (February 13) around 2 AM in San Diego's North Park when his assailant called him an anti-gay slur and started to beat him up. In a video, which he posted on Facebook after the incident, the 54-year-old owner said that he had never been physically assaulted for his sexuality and blamed it on President Donald Trump

"This has never, ever happened to me. So, somebody hit me in the face because I’m gay, and I have never, ever in my entire life have experienced this. And I blame this on Trump and all of you that supported him cause I have never in my entire life ever experienced this. Ever. And look at my face, cause someone beat me up because I was gay," he confessed. "And I blame Trump and all of those who support him. The person who hit me said because I’m gay. So thank you, those who voted for him…thank you."

The San Diego Police Department confirmed that Zschiesche did indeed file a police report. Lips Drag Queen Showplace Restaurant and Bar has locations in New York, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, San Diego and Chicago. At time of press, the attacker had not yet been found.
