Hockey Announcer Makes Homophobic Remark About Gay Couple During Game

March 8, 2017

Over the weekend, a gay couple was called out during a UK hockey game when the arena announcer called their on-camera kiss "disgusting."

It all went during Saturday's match between the Sheffield Steelers and Cardiff Devils when announcer David Simms made the homophobic comment and insisted that venue security kick the couple out. "That’s disgusting. Security, get rid of them," he reportedly said when their smooth, which was on display on the big screen.

Needless to say, Simms' remarks (rightfully so) caused a backlash on social media, to which he attempted a poor explanation of his behavior and said that his comment was merely a joke.

"I am not homophobic, you have known me long enough. I haven't got a bad bone in my body," Simms explained in a interview with The Star. "If the comments made anyone upset or offended anybody then of course I apologize completely. Maybe I live in a different world. I can’t really see the offense I have caused. But if people have been offended… people who know me know I don’t like to offend. I am truly sorry if I did do that."

Sorry, David, if you can't see your remark was a slap in the face to the LGBT community, then your apology means absolutely nothing. Fortunately, Neale Gibson, who is the director of the Sheffield City Council that owns the arena, is looking into the matter.
