INTERVIEW: The Magician Talks Playing New York City, 'Magic Tape 69'

By James Dinh

March 22, 2017

Despite bookings at Ibiza, Palm Springs, and Amsterdam, there's something about playing a show in New York City, according to The Magician. Last week, the DJ/producer took to Brooklyn's Output to kick off a mini-tour, which sees the beatmaker (born Stephen Fasano) exploring the east coast and making his way down to Miami for a number of shows.

Prior to kicking off the trek, iHeartRadio caught up with the recent Sony signee for an exclusive Q&A to discuss his interest in the Big Apple, the Julian Perretta-assisted single, "Tied Up," and his recent decision to celebrate the 69th edition of his Magic Tape mix series with a streamed party at The Museum of Sex. Take a look below!

You’re set for a mini east coast tour, which kicked off at Output in Brooklyn. What makes this one of your favorite clubs in the world?

The sound system is great. There's not too many lights. Cameras are not allowed and the welcome is great, too! When you have all those parameters, you can play whatever you want and people are captivated.

What do you think makes New York City different from other cities?

New York has an energy that I can't find anywhere else. It's a cosmopolitan city with so many different communities and people understand how to live together. Also, New Yorkers have the best style in the World. London can be eccentric. Paris can be smart and Milan can be a little too classy. New York has the right balance.

"Tied Up" dropped about a few weeks ago to an amazing response. How did you initially link up with Julian Perretta?

My record label boss, who is also Julian's label boss, wanted him to sing the song. We haven't met yet. [We've] just been in touch on emails.

Talk to us about Magic Tape 69 and the decision to perform it live.

My manager suggested to do something special for [the] number 69. He got the idea to do it at the Museum of Sex in New York because I'm there for a couple of days. We did the Magic Tape 50 live from London in 2015 and it went really well. I think I'm gonna do Magic Tapes live and streamable more and more everywhere in the world. I hope people will enjoy being there and it's also nice to watch it. Paris and Ibiza are already on the map for next!

What else does 2017 have in store for you?

End of 2016 to early 2017, I have toured less because I wanted to get my concentration into creativity. I did many different studio sessions, which have been successful. I got "Tied Up" from there but also four other new tracks ready to be released. 2017 is gonna be a great year in term of releases. Besides that, I take care of my label Potion. We just signed two new artists: Just Kiddin and Parx. Aston Shuffle, Mickey and Bobby Nourmand are working on new stuff as well.
