International superstars BTS were presented with the "Top Social Artist" Award at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards tonight (May 21).
BTS is the first South Korean band to be nominated for a BBMA. They won against heavyweight pop stars Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber. Bieber, who was also nominated this year, previously held a 6 year winning streak in this category (he has been the only recipient of the Top Social Award since it's creation). The honor also marks BTS' first American award show win.
Since their 2013 debut, BTS has been making major waves on the international music scene since their debut. The band's popularity skyrocketed when their 2015 single "I Need U" broke records and garnered several award show wins on South Korean music shows. The group's infectious hip-hop-R&B-EDM fusion has taken them to the biggest stages all around Asia and beyond. BTS recently wrapped up their North American "Wings Tour" in 2017 playing sold-out arenas in Newark, Chicago and Los Angeles.
