INTERVIEW: LANY's Favorite Things

Electronic band LANY, has been touring around the festival circuit and with bands and artists including X Ambassadors, Troye Sivan and Halsey over the last few years, and now, the trio has released their debut self-titled album.

LANY's new record features 16 new songs, including their single "ILYSB" -- which stands for "I Love You So Bad." The title, as the band tells us, was inspired by something Paul heard at the end of a phone call then scribbled on to a post-it and left in his car:

"I was driving home from Santa Monica to Hollywood, and there's a girl in my passenger seat. She was on the phone with her sister, and it was the first time this girl and I had ever hung out, really. And she ended the call with saying, 'I love you so bad.' And I heard it, and then I immediately knew, I was like, 'I want to write a song called I Love You So Bad.' So we would keep talking and hanging out, and I would text her, 'ILYSB,' instead of [saying the whole phrase], we would just say it all the time. And she wrote it on a sticky note in my car. About a couple months later, I had this cord progression and melody, and then just spit all the words out in one day. It just kind of came out."

In the same vein of their single "ILYSB" from their debut album, we asked the guys about all of the things that they love so bad -- all of their favorite things. Read on below!

Favorite LA Hangout:

Jake: "For me it would probably be Blue Bottle in West Hollywood. My wife and I go there all the time."

Paul: "I don't really know. I went to this bar called Friends, and it was amazing. And it's on the east side, and they had some really cool music playing. It was very packed, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I thought that was cool."

Les: "I'm just gonna say the beach."

Favorite New York Hangout:

Paul: "I love the West Village. I think that's goals for me."

Jake: "For me it's more food and coffee, and it's a place called Two Hands. It's on Mott St. It's more breakfast and brunch.

Favorite Festival:

Paul: "I liked Outside Lands quite a bit."

Jake & Les: "Bonnaroo."

Jake: "Wes and I have been [to Bonnaroo] a few times, and in college, I think I've been about five or six times. So to finally play it was like a dream."

Favorite Food to Eat While On Tour:

Jake: "Peanut butter."

Les: "On tour/off tour, pizza."

Paul: "And probably chicken nuggets."

Favorite city - LA or NY:

Jake: "Los Angeles."

Paul: "I don't know. I really like New York. So, I go back and forth."

Les: "I'd say New York"

Favorite John Mayer song:

Paul: "Man. I could give you like 10. But, 'Clarity.'"

Jake: "A Face to Call Home."

Les: "Gravity."

Favorite song off your new album:

Jake: "A song called 'Tampa.' Be on the lookout!"

Paul: "13."

Les: "Hurts."

Favorite Pancakes:

Jake: "Chocolate chip pancakes."

Paul: "I love just straight-up buttermilk pancakes. But, there's this place in Austin called Kerbey Lane Café, and they have a cinnamon roll pancake. It's so amazing."

Les: "Blueberry pancakes."

Favorite Fan Moment:

Les: "My favorite was last fall when we played LA and Paul gave his guitar, like threw it out to a fan. And she came down to the green room after, and she was just sobbing. And she had like ... I don't remember the story, but she had just got on a train, and secretly came to our show. Like her parents didn't know. I just thought it was so cool. Because she was so happy."
