Harry Styles' big screen debut in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk will make plenty of Directioners swoon on July 21, but an interesting tid bit has come out from the film's promotional circuit: Nolan didn't really know much about the pop star's level of fame before casting him.
In a new interview via Billboard, the famed director said that Styles' role was earned by his talent and had nothing to do with him being a member of the biggest boy band in recent years. "I don't think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was," he said. "I mean, my daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn't really that aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table."
In the upcoming film, Styles plays a British soldier caught in the madness of the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk Frank in 1940. Despite knowing the rigorous schedule needed to be a pop star, the 24-year-old was surprised at how much goes into the world of movie making.
"I'd say realizing the scale of the production was very overwhelming," Harry admitted. "I think whatever you imagine kind of a giant film set to be like, this was very ambitious even by those standards. You know the boats and the planes and the volume of bodies…it was pretty amazing."
