Some news viewers think they have the right to judge and criticize local anchors and reporters, but journalists have a thick skin and can usually quietly take the negative feedback.
However, when a woman called in and told Augusta, Georgia anchor Laura Warren, who is 20 weeks pregnant, that she looks "disgusting," Laura had to respond.
In a voicemail message, the viewer told Laura, "Please go to Target and buy some decent maternity clothes so you don’t walk around looking like you got a watermelon strapped under your too tight outfits. Target’s got a great line of maternity clothes in case you’ve never heard of such a thing. You’re getting to where you’re being disgusting on the TV."
Laura responded on her blog, writing that she normally wouldn't give a call like that the time of day, but she is "pregnant, hormonal, currently not allowed to drink wine, and feeling extra in touch with [her] feminist side," so she had to say something.
First, Warren described the many thoughts the voicemail brought about, like will she have to deal with things like this for the remaining 20 weeks of her pregnancy? Which outfit was the woman talking about? Does the lady know she is wearing maternity clothes? Does she want her to wear a muumuu? And why after all of the compliments she has gotten is this one complaint the thing that's stuck?
Laura talked about how she fears raising her son in a world where adults "can say such cruel things?" She wrote, "It worries me. Right now, I can protect this sweet little boy. But, I won't always be able to. I certainly don't want him to dwell on the negative things insecure people are bound to say about him."
In the end, Warren decided to "turn her negative energy into positive energy" by saying as many nice things as she can to as many people as she can, adding that she plans to do it "in a dress that fits these beautiful new curves with [her] 'watermelon' stomach showing."
