Original Script For 'The Big Sick' Featured A 'RuPaul's Drag Race' Joke

July 20, 2017

The Big Sick is gaining rave reviews for its charming romance story starring Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kasan, which is based on the real-life relationship between Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon. If timing wasn't such an important logistic for the filming, the script would have also featured a joke about RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“At one point in The Big Sick script, Emily shows Kumail RuPaul’s Drag Race and it’s a running convo between them," Gordon, who co-wrote the script, told her Twitter followers. “Cut for length, still in my heart and I think Kumail transforms Emily's hospital gown into a gown? It's all part of my attempts to write @RuPaul into everything I do."

When pressed on the existence of the scenes, she kindly reminded folks that the running conversation about Ru was only written. "I should reiterate that these scenes were written, not shot. When you write with Barry and Judd, you experiment a lot. A lot," she continued.
