When Kevin Walsh was in camp at age 13, he met the "prettiest girl [he'd] ever seen" - she'd go on to accidentally save his life and then, ten years later, marry him.
Kevin told his story on Quora, talking about how he became friends with his crush and stayed in touch with her after camp on IM.
He explained that by high school they had drifted apart but he still thought about her every day. Then, his senior year, he went through some "dumb high school stuff" that put him into a depression so bad he planned to take his own life.
Kevin was literally seconds from committing suicide when his phone rang. It was a number he didn't recognize so he picked it up and it was Blake, his crush from camp.
Even though he and Blake hadn't spoken for a year, she picked that exact moment to dial him up. He confessed to her that he was suicidal and she talked him out of it, making him promise to call her the next day.
After they hung up, he wrote down some things that he really wanted to tell her some day - like how she was so important to him. Ten years later, he used those words to propose to Blake.
All it took was one sympathetic ear on one caring person to help Kevin through a hard time. If you're in a similar spot and need someone to listen to you, go here.
