On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump administration is going to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals over the next six months. The executive order, referred to as DACA, was signed by President Obama in 2012.
DACA allowed children who were brought to America illegally by their parents, and who met certain criteria, to avoid deportation and get work permits. In the 5 years since DACA was enacted, 800,000 people signed up.
President Obama was quick to speak out against ending DACA, writing a lengthy post on his Facebook page criticizing the Trump administration for their decision.
Let’s be clear: the action taken today isn’t required legally. It’s a political decision, and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us.
