Over 500,000 car seats sold by Diono are being recalled because they may increase the risk of injury for certain kids. The recall covers the Radian R100, Radian R120, Radian RXT, Olympia, Pacifica, and Rainier convertible and booster seats that were manufactured form January 2014 to September 2017. The increased risk of injury was found during company testing.
The NHTSA recall warns that children over 65 pounds "could be at increased risk of chest injury in an accident:"
An occupant restrained using Type 1 (lap belt only) without top tether could be at increased risk of chest injury in an accident. Occupants over 65 pounds using the harness could be at increased risk of striking the vehicle interior during a crash. Radian child restraints have a long history of excellent performance in the field with no reported injuries or deaths associated with these use modes.
Diono says that they have no reports of people being inured and that very few people use the booster seats for children over 65 pounds. The company says they will send customers an energy absorbing pad and a new chest clip, which should alleviate the problem.
