Three hikers can now be called heroes after they risked their lives to rescue a dog in distress stuck at the bottom of an abandoned mine shaft.
Portia Scovern’s boyfriend was hiking near Fairplay, Colorado when he heard something from the cavernous space, but he didn’t think twice about it. He continued on his journey without giving it a second thought.
But when he returned with Portia and a friend, they heard that the noise was really a bark. This time, it was more distinct, and they could tell that it was, indeed, a dog stuck at the bottom of the mining shaft.
They knew they couldn’t leave the pooch behind. One of them descended into the hole and managed to pull the starving pup to safety. He may have risked his life going all the way down in that hole.
The dog was a female, and it looked like she hadn’t eaten in quite some time. She was skinny and had clearly lost weight. They fed and bathed her while searching for the dog’s owner.
Thankfully, her human was located in no time, and she was able to go home! Hopefully, she won’t stray like this again and end up in another tough spot!
