New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick says they liked quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo but it was time to make a move and do what was best for the future of the team. Belichick talked about Monday's trade of their backup quarterback to the San Francisco 49ers. He says they didn't want to trade Garoppolo but with the way the league is set up, they felt it was the best decision for the team going forward. The Patriots traded Garoppolo to the 49ers on Monday in exchange for a 2018 2nd round draft pick. The 25-year-old has completed 67% of his passes for 690 yards, 5 touchdowns and no interceptions over 17 career games, serving primarily as the backup to Tom Brady.
He was New England's second-round draft pick in 2014 out of Eastern Illinois.
