30 Most Influential Teens List By 'TIME': Shawn Mendes, Khalid & More

By Megan Armstrong, Billboard

November 2, 2017

TIME released its 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017 list this morning (November 2), including some of the biggest names in music: Shawn Mendes, Khalid and Noah Cyrus to start. Before listing out the 30 selections, TIME outlines that each teen was chosen based on "accolades across numerous fields, global impact through social media and overall ability to drive news."

Mendes, 19, was also named No. 1 on Billboard's 21 Under 21 2017 in September. For TIME's honor, the "Stitches" singer said that he hopes his next album -- which marks his third -- "will be the best album yet by a landslide."

He added: "I always want people to feel like they can do anything, and I hope that I can inspire them."

Other 19-year-old musicians honored are Khalid and Jaden Smith (whose 17-year-old sister, Willow, is also being recognized). Khalid is coming off winning the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and opening on tour for Lorde (who has previously been named to this list). "It's been a year of firsts and surprises," he said.

"America today feels like a scary place for many people, people of color, DREAMERS, women, the LGBTQ community," he also said. "It's the young people of America, the teens, who have the power to create change."

Khalid's debut album was appropriately named American Teen

The youngest person on the list is 13-year-old Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown, whom Mendes is a big fan of.

The Smith siblings, of course, have the most precedent on the list with their father, Will Smith, and mother, Jada Pinkett-Smith, but not the only precedent -- Miley Cyrus' 17-year-old sister, Noah Cyrus, made the list, too.
