Harvey Milk Anniversary As State's First Openly Gay Elected Official

Today marks the 40th anniversary of when Harvey Milk became California's first openly gay elected official.  The life and legacy of the late San Francisco supervisor and activist will be honored at a public gathering tonight in the Castro District.  

Two new art installations will be unveiled starting at 6:00 p.m. at Harvey Milk Plaza.  This November 8th is also the 20th anniversary of the giant rainbow flag first being raised in the Castro.  

Milk, who fought for equality and gay rights, was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone in 1978.  They were killed by former supervisor Dan White, who ended up serving five years behind bars. White committed suicide in 1983.
